Hi guys, Dr. Shelly here!
I just realized why it usually takes me such a long time to meet my goals. I want to share with you what I was doing wrong, so you can learn from me and hopefully not make the same mistake I did.
For the next 10 seconds, I want you to think about every significant accomplishment you’ve had in the last five years of your life. Ready. Go….. Ok, now ask yourself this question: “Did It really have to take that long to accomplish those goals?
If you’re anything like me, the answer is probably not. You probably took way longer than you needed to reach those goals and to achieve that success.
Think about it, every time you achieve a specific goal, it improves your life. It makes you feel good about yourself because you completed something you started. The human brain is wired with a reward system that every time you meet a goal, you get a shot of dopamine that makes your perspective on life better. So why does it take us longer than it needs to achieve our goals? You would think we would try to achieve our goals as quickly as possible, right?
Whether it’s was training for a bodybuilding competition, building my practice, or putting out videos like this one… I could have gotten those things done way faster if I just stopped trying to figure out every single detail on my own.
Looking back, I realize that I was just too slow of a learner because I wanted to do it all myself. And since time is NOT a renewable asset, I realize this was pretty stupid of me to do.
I know I’m not the only one who has operated like this. There are a lot of people, maybe you’re one of them, who spend way too much time trying to figure things out when there are others who have already achieved what you’re trying to achieve for yourself. Why do we do this? Well, because it’s comfortable. I mean, who wants to ask others for help when it can be uncomfortable admitting that you don’t have the answers?
The other reason we do this is that it’s uncomfortable to spend money. And usually, when we ask others for help in achieving our goals faster, it costs money.
But here’s the deal. Money is a renewable asset and time is not. Think about it like this… you can spend 5 years achieving a goal on your own or you can spend a few months achieving that same goal by spending some money to cut down your learning curve. And… The cool thing about doing it this way is that you still reap all the benefits of achieving that goal, including that dopamine reward system high.
So whatever your goals are in life, there are two ways of achieving them: There’s the long conventional path and then there’s the shorter, less conventional path.
The long conventional path is the result of not being someone who actively seeks help from others. The long conventional path is what happens when you buy into the ideas that success and progress take time. If you accept this concept, then you’re going to end up waiting 5, 10, or even 20 years to obtain happiness. You’re waiting decades of your life to finally cash in on the rewarding feeling of achievement.
The penalty of trying to do everything through trial and error is that you will have to achieve everything you’re currently capable of producing 20 times slower than you need to.
A decade ago, if I had been willing to spend more money and ask more people for help, I would be 20 years ahead of where I’m at now.
So learn from my mistake. Save yourself unnecessary time and effort and find someone to help you achieve your goals.
If you want to start your own business, reach out to someone who has their own business. Ask them to coach you in building your own. If you want to lose weight and you’ve been trying to do it on your own for years, ask us for help! My team and I will save you years of trial and error. If you want to learn how to play an instrument or if you want to learn how to invest your money or if you want to learn how to apply makeup properly. Whatever it is you want to achieve, go find people who do these things already and pay them to help you!
Don’t be like me and say that you don’t want to spend the money or you can’t afford it. If that’s your mindset then you need to ask yourself whether you actually want to achieve that goal. Because at this point in my life, if I want something bad enough I’m going to put my money where my mouth is.
You guys know who Socrates is right? Well, apparently he was a pretty smart dude. And he said this…. “Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for.”
Now, quit wasting time, and let’s start accomplishing goals in record speed! And please reach out to me if you have a health-related goal, I’d be more than happy to help you!
