Hey guys, Dr. Shelly here. I want to share something really interesting that I recently learned about the coronavirus and sugar.
First of all, I think it’s awesome that so many more people are taking their health seriously these days. People who have never taken vitamins before are taking them, people who never cared about what they eat or think about what they eat are making better choices and people who never used to wash their hands are finally washing their hands.
As many of you already know, I have a natural healthcare practice in Florida and I often joke around that I actually run a sugar rehab facility because so many people when they first come in to see me are full-blown sugar addicts. And believe it or not, the amount of sugar they were consuming was the main cause of their health problems. Yep… This is a real thing. Most health problems are either caused by too much sugar consumption or exacerbated by too much sugar consumption. This is why when my patients decrease their sugar consumption their health problems resolve. I’m mentioning all of this because sugar has the ability to depress the immune system. And there has never been a better time than right now, this second, to reduce the amount of sugar you’re eating.
I know that reducing your sugar intake can be a major struggle and quitting it altogether may sound impossible especially when you’re quarantined inside with a kitchen full of non-perishable high sugar items. Most of us wouldn’t even be able to go a single day without sugar, and now we’re in the middle of a stressful pandemic and I’m suggesting to you to cut back a bit.
But listen to this… it might change your mind and you might drink one less soda are you one less cookie today because you heard this… The CDC just announced that people with diabetes are among those at increased risk for complications from COVID-19. Like I already said, sugar depresses the immune system, so higher blood sugar levels puts you at an increased risk of getting sick. But increased blood sugar levels also make it harder to treat viral infections.
Many of you know that Tom Hanks recently testes positive for COVID-19. What you may not know is that he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013. Now, I’m not trying to say that everyone with diabetes will test positive for COVID-19. But since we know sugar depresses the immune system and we know our immune systems are at risk right now, why would you walk into your kitchen and eat something really high in sugar?
Everyone is so adamant right now about social distancing, and I’m putting this video out there to encourage all of you also practice sugar-distancing. By the way, I’m gonna coin that term when this is all over.
Anyway, we’re using self-control to stay put in our homes isolated from other people because we know we will be able to see them again so we’re ok with it. So let me encourage you to do the same thing with sugar. Have the same self-control to decrease the amount of sugar you’re consuming right now. It’s not forever (even though I think it should be) but if it helps you to decrease your sugar consumption by knowing it’s not permanent then, then keep that mindset and put the sugar down.
I hope somebody is watching this right now and decided to put down their soda or throw out the granola bar they were about to take a bite of. I know it’s hard. I know it’s even harder to cut back on sugar especially when you’re stressed. It’s hard for me too, honestly. But I want you all to join me in practicing sugar-distancing at least until we’re done with this social-distancing situation.
